The 12th National Games for Persons with Disabilities and the 9th National Special Olympic Games concluded on Monday evening with a closing ceremony in Shenzhen, capping off the first-ever edition of the Games jointly hosted by Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao.
The 45-minute ceremony featured about 600 performers, about 130 of whom were people with disabilities.
State Councillor Shen Yiqin formally declared the Games closed.
During the ceremony, Chang Zheng, deputy director of the organising committee, noted that the Games underscored China's advancements in disability sports and provided a solid foundation for upcoming international competitions, including the 2026 Asian Para Games and the 2028 Paralympics.
Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Eric Chan praised the tri‑regional collaboration in his speech, saying the partners had "co-authored a new chapter filled with warmth and strength in the integrated development of the Greater Bay Area".
He commended the athletes for their "unwavering willpower" and for inspiring everyone "to bravely face challenges and to never give up".
The Games saw impressive athletic achievements, with 7,824 competitors from 34 delegations competing in 46 sports.
Together, they broke 15 world records and 156 national records.
Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law, who also attended the ceremony, celebrated the local team’s success.
"I am deeply proud of their outstanding performances in different events which have brought glory to Hong Kong," she said in a statement.
"I believe the extraordinary determination and perseverance of our athletes with disabilities in achieving such remarkable results will bring more positive energy to our society."
The ceremony concluded with the official handover of the Games flag to Hunan province, which is the host of the next edition of the National Games in 2029.
