Hong Kong is expected to endure sweltering heat over the coming days as Tropical Storm Kujira remains at a safe distance, while a much more powerful system – Typhoon Dolphin – threatens to bring severe weather and significant travel disruption to parts of Japan.

According to the Observatory, Kujira will linger over the central South China Sea near Luzon on Wednesday, maintaining a distance of roughly 700 kilometres or more from the territory.

The forecaster assessed that the storm poses a low immediate threat to the city, and added that the issuance of the Standby Signal No 1 remains unlikely unless the system shifts significantly closer.

Meanwhile, Typhoon Dolphin is projected to bring violent conditions to Japan's Okinawa and Amami regions.

Maximum sustained winds are forecast to reach 144 kilometres per hour on Thursday, with gusts as high as 216 kilometres per hour – strong enough, in some areas, to cause structural damage to houses.

The approaching storm has already prompted flight cancellations, with HK Express having called off all flights between Hong Kong and Okinawa on Friday, along with four flights on Thursday and two additional flights on Saturday.

Dolphin is expected to enter the East China Sea around Friday.

Though its subsequent trajectory remains highly uncertain, the National Meteorological Center in Beijing has already urged residents along China's eastern coastal areas to remain vigilant as authorities continue to monitor its path closely.
