Hong Kong, China’s top-performing athletes at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games were commended by Chief Executive John Lee on Monday for their historic performances.

The SAR achieved its best result to date at the Games in Japan, reaching new heights in both the gold medal count and the number of medals won overall.

In total, the delegation won 54 medals, comprising 11 gold, 19 silver, and 24 bronze.

Lee paid tribute to athletes during a commendation ceremony, noting that their dedication to compete through injuries and persevere when falling behind had earned everyone’s deepest respect.

He also presented certificates to the top-performing athletes, including wushu star Lydia Sham, who earned the city's first gold medal at the Games.

Lee stressed the government would continue to invest in sports development.

“During the 2026–27 financial year, the government’s resources invested in sports development reached about HK$8.1 billion, nearly a 70 percent increase compared to a decade ago,” he said.

“We allocated about HK$1 billion to the Hong Kong Sports Institute, providing comprehensive training, direct financial subsidies, and support in sports medicine and sports science.

“The government will continue to support the development of sports medicine and sports science, athlete training, and their career development. In the next five years, resources allocated to sports development will cumulatively increase by 20 percent,” Lee added.

Chief Secretary Eric Chan, Secretary for Culture, Sports and Tourism Rosanna Law, President of the Sports Federation & Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, Timothy Fok, among others, also attended the ceremony.
