Hundreds of job lost under TVB restructuring Listen
TVB has announced it will lay off more than 300 people as part of a restructuring plan. In a filing to the stock exchange, the loss-making broadcaster said it would merge two channels. It said the new channel would aim to provide content for a young audience. Vanessa Cheng reports:
SFC accused of being too 'passive' over Hounax scam Listen
The Securities and Futures Commission has defended its action against a suspicious virtual currency exchange platform, saying the investigation began at an early stage. This comes after a lawmaker accused the commission of being too passive and not doing enough to protect investors. Study shows HK unprepared for future extreme weather Listen
Researchers are urging authorities to step up disaster mitigation plans as they warn that the number of hot nights in Hong Kong will soar in the coming decades and there will be even heavier rainfall. A joint study by the Chinese University, the University of Hong Kong and the University of Science and Technology, shows the government's current plans for dealing with extreme weather may not be sufficient. Project leader, Professor Edward Ng from The Chinese University's School of Architecture, told Janice Wong that measures to combat extreme weather need changes both in government's policies and citizens' practice:
HK's Cop28 forum to promote green financing Listen
Hong Kong will host its first forum at the United Nations climate talks to promote the city as a green and sustainable financial centre. The event will be co-hosted by the Financial Services Development Council and Friends of the Earth at the upcoming Cop28 summit in Dubai. Friends of the Earth chairman, Plato Yip, says the city's regional strengths give it a formidable advantage in becoming a global epicentre for green finance. He spoke to Samantha Butler:
Hopes to preserve Choi Hung Estate's sense of identity Listen
An architect and public housing expert has urged authorities to preserve the famous rainbow colour theme of Choi Hung Estate if the redevelopment of the decades-old estate is given the go-ahead. The Housing Authority is reportedly planning to demolish and redevelop the estate, which was built in the 1960s. Professor Rosman Wai of the University of Hong Kong said the colours gave the neighbourhood a sense of identity. She told Elvis Yu more about the estate's unique design and features:
Online booking system launched for restricted areas Listen
A new police platform has launched for people who want to apply for permits to hold activities or conduct location filming in public places, and for entering restricted areas near the border, such as Sha Tau Kok. Coalition group to host UAE investment forums Listen
Hong Kong Coalition says it agreed with officials in Abu Dhabi to host a joint investment forum on an annual basis starting from next year. The NGO says it will organise the events in Hong Kong with the Chinese Importers' and Exporters' Association while the Abu Dhabi Investment Office will hold the forums in the United Arab Emirates. HK's interbank rate rises to 16-year high Listen
The one-month Hong Kong interbank offered rate, or Hibor, which is used to price the majority of local mortgage loans, has risen by 15 basis points to 5.53 percent, the highest since October 2007. Property analyst, Hannah Jeong, who is the Head of Valuation and Advisory Services at Colliers, said she was concerned by the latest Hibor rate increase, saying it could also dampen the property market sentiment in Hong Kong.
