An expert from a leading think tank says Beijing is not going to take action against Taiwan, unless the island makes "antagonistic statements". Einar Tangen, a senior fellow at the Taihe Institute, also said the outcome of the leadership race in Taiwan showed that people on the island might want more engagement with Beijing. The Houthi militia have threatened a "strong and effective response" to US and UK air strikes in Yemen, further escalating tensions in the region. Those strikes were in retaliation against the Iran-backed Houthi forces, who have been carrying out months of attacks on Red Sea shipping. The Houthi militia want Israel to end its war in Gaza.
