Man dies after running in Hong Kong Marathon Listen
A 30-year-old man has died after taking part in the Hong Kong Marathon. It was the first time the mega sporting event was staged, after the city emerged from the Covid pandemic. The Hong Kong, China Association of Athletics Affiliates said it was saddened by the death and expressed condolences to the man's family. It reminded runners to pay attention to their physical conditions and take appropriate post-race recovery measures. Natale Ching reports:
Local runner wins women's 10km race Listen
Around 74,000 runners took part in the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon on Sunday. Many of the participants, including home-grown movie star Chow Yun-fat, said they thoroughly enjoyed the run. Anne Chan reports:
Public "ready" for waste-charging scheme Listen
An environmentalist says it is reasonable for the government to delay its waste charging scheme to allow the public more time to prepare. On Friday, authorities announced the pay-as-you-throw scheme would instead just be rolled out at government offices from April 1, and delayed by four months for everyone else. Yau Wing-kwong, founder of the Environmental Association, says in the past few weeks, their community-run recycling centres have seen a "massive increase" as people begin clearing out their homes. He told Janice Wong that he believed the public, despite creating a lot of noise, was ready for household waste charging:
Elderly, vulnerable warned over Covid Listen
Infectious diseases expert Ivan Hung has called on the public, especially the elderly and the immunocompromised, to take every possible measure against the coronavirus. He said although Covid had transitioned into an endemic, those who are vulnerable could still develop very severe diseases if infected. Priscilla Ng reports:
Tenants of subdivided flats still being overcharged Listen
The Society for Community Organisation has called on the government to do more to protect the rights of those living in subdivided flats. The group made the call after a survey it conducted found more than 30 percent of such tenants had their rents increased over the past two years, and more than 60 percent said their landlords overcharged them for electricity. It said better enforcement of laws introduced in January 2022 was needed to restrict landlords from arbitrarily raising rents or overcharging for utilities. Review underway into water rates Listen
The Director of Water Supplies, Tony Yau, says a review as to whether or not to raise water bills will be completed in a month or two at the earliest. He says authorities will consider a basket of factors, including Hong Kong’s economic situation and people’s affordability, before making a final decision. Damon Pang reports:
FS vows 'balanced measures' in upcoming budget Listen
Financial Secretary Paul Chan says he will take into full account Hong Kong's economic situation when deciding what measures to implement in next month's Budget. He said it was inevitable for the SAR - being a small and fully open economy - to be affected by uncertainties in the external environment. Damon Pang reports:
Davos delegates see no US recession in 2024 Listen
The World Economic Forum ended on Friday in Davos against the backdrop of conflicts in the Middle East and Ukraine, as well as impending elections in dozens of countries. Many CEOs and executives say they foresee an upbeat US economy in 2024 but are concerned about China and Europe and the impact of unexpected global shocks on inflation.
