Hundreds of firefighters have battled through the night to control a huge blaze at a construction site near Tin Shui Wai. The fire was upgraded to a number four alarm, the second-highest level, on Tuesday night but was still not under control by Wednesday morning. Jacqueline Guico reports:

The government is appealing to the public to be patient over its waste-charging scheme after a prominent figure suggested scrapping the plan. It comes after a poll of residents involved in a trial of the pay-as-you-throw scheme showed many were not using the designated rubbish bags. The Transport Department has approved the first smart taximeter, offering more e-payment options. Passengers will be able to pay electronically through the “Taxi Pay” platform with 18 different local and international payment options, including Visa, Mastercard, and WeChat Pay. Jason Ngan, chief executive of Wonder, the payments gateway firm in Hong Kong behind the system, told Hailey Yip that more than 1,000 taxis were already using meter and they were aiming to install a total of 8,000 devices by the end of the year:

A think tank has called on the government to play a bigger role in supporting dying patients. Dicky Chow, a senior researcher at the Our Hong Kong Foundation, said while the government was introducing legislation that allowed people to make decisions in advance regarding life-sustaining treatment, more should be done in other areas. A commercial real estate services firm says transaction volumes in the leasing market picked up in the first quarter.
