Firefighters battle massive construction site blaze Listen
Hundreds of firefighters have battled through the night to control a huge blaze at a construction site near Tin Shui Wai. The fire was upgraded to a number four alarm, the second-highest level, on Tuesday night but was still not under control by Wednesday morning. Jacqueline Guico reports:
Govt secures local broadcasting rights to Olympics Listen
Chief Executive John Lee says the government has bought the broadcasting rights to the Paris Olympics, like it did for the previous games in Tokyo. He said this was in response to Hongkonger's high expectations for the event. He also said the free broadcasts of the Olympics, which take place later this year, could help unify people. Sports-sector lawmaker, Kenneth Fok, says free-to-air broadcasts of Olympic events will mean the public here can show their support for Hong Kong's athletes. Fok, who is also the vice president of the Sports Federation and Olympic Committee of Hong Kong, China, also said he hoped authorities could talk to TV stations about possible partnerships for future sports tournaments. A sports professor says with the government bearing the cost for the broadcast rights for the Olympics, he hopes the TV networks will put more money into producing attractive programmes for the games. CE urges patience over pilot waste scheme Listen
The government is appealing to the public to be patient over its waste-charging scheme after a prominent figure suggested scrapping the plan. It comes after a poll of residents involved in a trial of the pay-as-you-throw scheme showed many were not using the designated rubbish bags. Speaking at his regular Tuesday media briefing, Chief Executive John Lee defended the scheme, saying it was in its early days, while a former official also spoke out in support of it. New taximeter offers more e-payment options Listen
The Transport Department has approved the first smart taximeter, offering more e-payment options. Passengers will be able to pay electronically through the “Taxi Pay” platform with 18 different local and international payment options, including Visa, Mastercard, and WeChat Pay. Jason Ngan, chief executive of Wonder, the payments gateway firm in Hong Kong behind the system, told Hailey Yip that more than 1,000 taxis were already using meter and they were aiming to install a total of 8,000 devices by the end of the year:
More support needed for dying patients Listen
A think tank has called on the government to play a bigger role in supporting dying patients. Dicky Chow, a senior researcher at the Our Hong Kong Foundation, said while the government was introducing legislation that allowed people to make decisions in advance regarding life-sustaining treatment, more should be done in other areas. He told Elvis Yu that the SAR government could learn from Singapore and Taiwan over how they support end-of-life care services:

Visitors to one of China's icebreaking vessels have described being impressed by the technology on display. The Xuelong 2, the nation's first domestically-built icebreaker, docked at the SAR on Monday for a five-day visit, for residents to have free tours on board. Kelly Yu reports:
Commercial leasing transactions pick up Listen
A commercial real estate services firm says transaction volumes in the leasing market picked up in the first quarter. CBRE says office leasing volumes surged by 35 percent compared to the previous quarter, thanks to a rebound in tourism and growing economic momentum. Its head of research, Marcos Chan, told Anne Chan that the commercial property market would see moderate improvement this year, helped by the government's initiatives to attract tourists:
Russian FM thanks China for support of Putin Listen
President Xi Jinping has met Russia's Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Beijing. In an earlier meeting, the nation's top diplomat told Lavrov that China would strengthen strategic cooperation with Moscow and that the two countries must stand on the side of "fairness and justice". Wendy Wong reports:
