A man who was among 12 suspects caught during an attempt to travel to Taiwan by speedboat in 2020 has been jailed for three years and 10 months by the District Court. 34-year-old Tang Kai-yin had earlier admitted perverting the course of justice through the escape bid, as well as possessing articles with intent to destroy or damage property during the 2019 protests. China's first-quarter GDP performance has comfortably beat analysts' expectations. The economy grew 5.3 percent year-on-year in the quarter, with officials saying the nation made solid progress. Chloe Feng reports:

An economist says over-performance in broad manufacturing helped boost China's first-quarter growth, although this was not expected to continue. A political analyst says he does not think the changing of the guard in Singapore will bring major changes to the Lion City. Lee has been in the top job for 20 years. Legislation in Britain that would introduce some of the strictest anti-smoking measures in the world has passed its first parliamentary vote. The law would ban anyone who turns 15 this year from ever buying cigarettes and restrict the flavours of vapes to make them less appealing to children. Benjamin Netanyahu's war cabinet is still considering how to respond to Iran's unprecedented missile and drone attack on Israel over the weekend. That attack came two weeks after an Israeli air strike had killed several senior Iranian commanders in the Iranian embassy complex in Damascus. Several nations around the world have urged restraint. But Paul Rogers, Professor of Peace Studies at Bradford University in the UK, told AnneMarie Evans why Israel would be keen to retaliate and what form this might take:

An expert commission in Germany has recommended abortion be legalised. Terminating a pregnancy is technically banned by a law that is more than 150-years-old - except if a mother's life is in danger or she is a victim of rape.
