Lawmakers have taken the government to task over its promotion of food waste recycling, ahead of the implementation of the waste charging scheme in August. One legislator says the recycling rate of about five percent was not good enough. Vanessa Cheng reports:

Greeners Action says food waste recycling is still a new concept in Hong Kong and the government should educate the public about its benefits. Beatrice Siu, the group's Senior public affairs officer, says since the municipal solid waste charging scheme was announced, more people are looking into recycling food waste but fewer people in private housing are using food waste processing bins. She told Vanessa Cheng that the government should gives incentives to the private sector over installing food waste bins:

Green groups are calling on an advisory council to veto an environmental impact assessment (EIA) for a project which aims to build a new technology hub in northern Hong Kong. The Advisory Council on the Environment will discuss the EIA for the San Tin Technopole project on Monday, before submitting its suggestions to the government. Wong Suet-mei is a senior conservation officer from one of the groups, the Hong Kong Bird Watching Society. She told Elvis Yu that the quality of this EIA fell far below the standard of previous assessments:

A social sciences professor has urged the government to provide more volunteering opportunities and peer support for the elderly, following a pandemic-era study. In the study, Chou Kee-lee from the Education University, along with other experts, arranged for a group of people aged 50 to 70, who had complained of loneliness, to provide volunteer check-in services for a group of low-income elderly people. Professor Chou told Hailey Yip that both groups benefited as a result:
Untreated sepsis lead to liver patient's death  Listenfacebook
The Coroner’s Court has heard that sepsis directly caused the death in 2017 of a liver-disease patient, whose condition worsened after two organ transplants. Two doctors who treated Tang Kwai-sze were later found guilty of professional misconduct for allegedly failing to prescribe an antiviral drug she needed. Frank Yung reports:

Customs officers have announced that they seized HK$100 million of worth of electronics on April 4 that they believed was to be smuggled to Malaysia. A 53-year-old woman was arrested the following day and authorities have not ruled out further arrests. Tony Sabine reports:

UK, Germany urge restraint during visit to Israel  Listenfacebook
The Israeli prime minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, has told the visiting British and German foreign ministers that his country will do whatever is needed to defend itself. David Cameron and Annalena Baerbock urged restraint after the huge missile and drone attack by Iran against Israel over the weekend. But speaking to reporters afterwards, Netanyahu vowed to defend his country. RTHK's Jerusalem correspondent, Robert Berger, told Annemarie Evans that the atmosphere in the city was tense amid the uncertainty of how Israel would respond:
Russian soldier death toll hits 50,000  Listenfacebook
Russia's military death toll in Ukraine has now passed the 50,000 mark, according to estimates from the BBC, an independent media group Mediazona, and volunteers who have been counting deaths since February 2022. The Russia-Ukraine war has dragged on for more than two years, with both sides suffering tens of thousands of deaths and Ukrainian towns and infrastructure destroyed. But RTHK's Moscow correspondent Fred Weir told AnneMarie Evans that he believed estimates of the military toll on Russia were far below the real number:

Australian scientists have detected record levels of bleaching to the Great Barrier Reef. 73 percent of the reef shows damage from heat stress. It is the latest sign of the impact of warmer oceans across the world. On Monday, US officials said the coral in all the world's oceans were suffering as part of a global mass coral bleaching. To help rescue and recover damaged coral, a group of scuba diving experts in the Philippines has been setting up coral nurseries in a popular dive spot. Aaron Tam reports:
