A former Australian Army lawyer - who leaked classified documents to journalists about alleged war crimes by Australian forces in Afghanistan - has been sentenced to more than five years in prison. David McBride admitted stealing classified defence documents in 2014 and 2015. He gave the material to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation which in 2017 published a seven-part series called “The Afghan Files”, detailing alleged crimes, including the killing of unarmed Afghans by Australian soldiers. Press freedom advocates criticised the five-year sentence. But RTHK's Australia correspondent Luke Hunt told Annemarie Evans that McBride would have been treated more harshly overseas:
