The Hong Kong Bird Watching Society says it hopes the government can think twice before proceeding with plans to turn wetlands in the northern New Territories into a technology hub. The Environmental Protection Department gave a conditional go-ahead to an environmental impact assessment for the San Tin Technopole project last Friday. The society's senior conservation officer, Wong Suet-mei, says she thinks the compensation measures mentioned under the conditions cannot address the ecological loss caused by the development. Biggest cocaine bust made at Ta Kwu Ling warehouse  Listenfacebook
Police say they seized about 225 kilograms of suspected cocaine worth more than HK$200 million at a warehouse in Ta Kwu Ling. Officers are calling it the largest cocaine bust this year. Two men were arrested and will appear in court on Monday. Elvis Yu reports:

A former Macau legislator says the head of the Hong Kong and Macau Affairs Office highlighted the role of local associations to boost governance and help promote Macau's development as an international city. Agnes Lam, from the Centre for Macau Studies at the University of Macau, said during his visit, Xia Baolong stressed the need for the SAR to use its advantages to build a so-called "golden business card". The United Nations has revised down the proportion of women and children among the reported fatalities from the war in Gaza, sparking debate over the accuracy of the figures. Despite the adjustment, the overall death toll there remains over 35,000, according to the Hamas-run health ministry, while in Israel, close to 1,200 Israelis were killed and hundreds more taken hostage following the Hamas attack on October 7. The months-long conflict in Gaza has severely disrupted education for tens of thousands of Palestinian youngsters. The private company Blue Origin has successfully launched a crew to the edge of space, including a 90-year-old man. Ed Dwight was chosen in 1961 by American President John F Kennedy as the first black man to be an astronaut candidate, but he never made it onto a NASA mission. Damon Pang reports:
IMF criticises US tariffs on Chinese goods  Listenfacebook
The International Monetary Fund has criticised the Biden administration for aggressively raising tariffs on some Chinese goods, saying the US would be better served by maintaining its open trade system. A spokesperson for the IMF said last week that such trade restrictions could distort trade and investment, fragment supply chains and trigger retaliatory actions. It comes as America's Trade Representative, Katherine Tai, had to dial back comments she made, saying the idea of the higher tariffs resulting in higher prices for Americans was largely debunked. RTHK's US economics correspondent, Barry Wood, told Hailey Yip that Tai's comments were wrong:

The chief executive of the Hong Kong Sports Institute says qualifying for fewer events at the Paris Olympics compared with the Tokyo Games will still be considered a success for local athletes.
