Govt seeks to increase penalties for fire safety breaches Listen
The government will be submitting an amendment bill in July to increase penalties for people who violate fire safety regulations. It comes after a deadly blaze at an old building in Jordan last month. Vanessa Cheng reports:

Lawmakers have passed an amendment bill to the city’s wildlife protection law, raising the maximum penalty for illegally feeding wild animals to HK$100,000 and a one-year jail term. Worldcoin's HK offices shut amid privacy concerns Listen
A cryptocurrency project founded by OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman has been ordered to cease operations in Hong Kong for allegedly breaching privacy rules. The Office of the Privacy Commissioner has launched a probe into Worldcoin after raiding six of its premises around Hong Kong earlier this year. As Natale Ching reports, it had been scanning people's irises and faces in return for free tokens:
MTR to re-tender Tung Chung East site Listen
The chairman of the MTR Corporation says things are looking up for its property arm, and it will tender its Tung Chung East site again. The railway company failed to receive any bids for the development project last year. Hailey Yip reports:
UK PM announces general election for July 4 Listen
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has called a national election for July 4. Speaking from Downing Street, Sunak said only his Conservatives could deliver bold action and he hailed his record on the economy, as the UK announced inflation had slowed to a near three-year low. But RTHK's London-based correspondent Gavin Grey, told Samantha Butler this was a risky strategy as the Conservatives are far behind the opposition Labour Party in opinion polls:
Singapore Airlines apologises for traumatic flight Listen
Singapore Airlines has expressed its condolences to the family of an elderly British passenger who died when a flight from London encountered turbulence. Dozens of people on board were injured and were treated in Bangkok where the plane made an emergency landing on Tuesday. Jacqueline Guico reports:
'Grab arm rest or seat during turbulence' Listen
A cabin crew instructor described the Singapore Airlines incident as rare, saying the pilots appear not to have caught the severe turbulence on their radar. Johann Wong from Air Canada says air passengers should always wear a seatbelt for safety, or if not - try to hold on to something, such as an arm rest or part of the seat. He spoke to Natale Ching:
North India bakes under a heatwave Listen
Authorities in India have issued a red alert for several northern states that are battling an intense heatwave. Temperatures have reached more than 47 degrees Celsius. It comes as politicians are canvassing for votes in the final two weeks of India's general election. RTHK's correspondent in Delhi, Murali Krishnan, told Annemarie Evans that the hot weather was a test of endurance for residents:
Tens of thousands turn out for Raisi's funeral Listen
Leaders and officials from different countries have attended the funeral of Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi and his companions, who died in a helicopter crash near the Azerbaijan border at the weekend. Top officials from China, Qatar, Hamas and Tunisia were among those offering their condolences in person. Damon Pang reports:
Ireland, Norway and Spain to recognise Palestinian state Listen
Palestinians have hailed as historic a pledge made by Ireland, Norway, and Spain to recognise Palestine as an independent state. The presidency of the Palestinian authority in Ramallah called on others to follow suit. Israel reacted angrily and recalled its ambassadors from the three countries. Jacqueline Guico reports:
Macron arrives in New Caledonia for crisis talks Listen
French President Emmanuel Macron has landed in the Pacific island of New Caledonia for crisis talks, after more than a week of deadly riots there. The French island's pro-independence parties have been blaming President Macron and his government for the riots. They fear that electoral reforms passed by lawmakers in France will dilute the votes of indigenous Kanaks, who make up 40 percent of the island's population of some quarter of a million people. Australia and New Zealand have been evacuating tourists from the island. RTHK's Australia correspondent Luke Hunt told Annemarie Evans what the Kanak population hope to achieve with Macron's visit:
Thailand marks milestone in saving endangered turtles Listen
Thailand has marked a milestone, becoming one of only five countries in the world to have reared newly-hatched leatherback turtles in captivity for over a year. Last week, scientists in Phuket released nearly a dozen of the baby turtles back into the wild as part of conservation efforts to save the critically-endangered species. Jacqueline Guico reports:
Thousands expected at next month's dragon boat races Listen
Over 4,000 paddlers will be making a splash in Victoria Harbour at the Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races next month. As Frank Yung reports, the Tourism Board will also start the mega event off with a bang by putting on a pyrotechnic display to mark the first day of the races:
