Chief Executive John Lee says he expects Hong Kong's economy will rise above the difficulties and challenges and improve next year. He made the comments on Sunday at the first public consultation event for his upcoming policy address. Anne Chan reports:
Expert says risk of mpox in SAR very low Listen
Infectious disease expert Ivan Hung has told the public not to panic about a new strain of the mpox virus which is more deadly and transmissible than previous variants. The World Health Organisation last week declared the mpox outbreak in Africa a global health emergency - the highest level of alarm that can be issued by the body. But Professor Hung, who heads the division of infectious diseases at the University of Hong Kong's medical school, said the chance of the virus spreading to the SAR was very low. But he told Elvis Yu that high-risk individuals should consider getting vaccinated and watch out for symptoms:
URA hits back at homeowners' maintenance complaints Listen
The Urban Renewal Authority has criticised homeowners who complained that it launched redevelopment projects just after they started maintenance work on their buildings. Its managing director, Wai Chi-sing, said it was wrong to think it was a waste of money when blocks needed to be maintained for public safety. Natale Ching reports:
Police say elderly no longer target of scammers Listen
Official data shows there were nearly 20,000 fraud cases in the first half of the year, accounting for 44 percent of all crimes in that period. Victims were conned out of HK$584 million between January to July. Many fell prey to phone scammers who claimed to be customer service agents of various online services, including instant messaging app, WeChat, and shopping platform, Taobao. Senior superintendent Tsang Nga-sze from the police's commercial crime bureau told Janice Lo that the elderly were no longer the fraudsters' primary target:
Fomer HK leader makes charitable call Listen
Former chief executive CY Leung says he hopes more young people can join the country's global charitable drive, saying Hongkongers have an advantage in such work. US vice president, Kamala Harris, is campaigning in the vital swing state of Pennsylvania before heading to Chicago, where the Democratic national convention will formally endorse her as its presidential candidate this week. Macron pays tribute to film icon, Alain Delon Listen
President Emmanuel Macron has paid tribute to the French film star Alain Delon, who has died at the age of 88, calling him not just a legendary actor but also a French monument. Writing on the social media platform X, President Macron said Delon played legendary roles and made the world dream. The actor had been in poor health since suffering a stroke in 2019.
