Union complains imported labourers being exploited Listen
A construction union says it has received complaints that imported labourers are being exploited, with some alleging they were forced to work extra shifts without getting paid. The government has been urged to step up monitoring to protect workers. Vanessa Cheng reports:
'Hotline needed to help probe workers' complaints' Listen
Unionist lawmaker Lam Chun-sing says there were similar concerns of worker exploitation several years ago when nursing homes began importing staff from the mainland. Lam, who chairs the Federation of Hong Kong and Kowloon Labour Unions, says the government needs to ensure that such staff are paid at the market rate, otherwise importing cheap labour would affect local workers. He told Janice Lo that the government could set up a hotline to investigate complaints:
Cathay cancels a further 22 flights over engine glitches Listen
Cathay Pacific says another 22 flights will be cancelled from Thursday to Saturday as work continues to replace fuel lines on several of its A350 planes. The airline said finishing the inspection and maintenance work had been challenging. Damon Pang reports:
Observatory considers T8 as Yagi approaches Listen
The Hong Kong Observatory says it may need to issue a typhoon signal No.8 between 4 and 7pm on Thursday afternoon. It issued the Strong Wind Signal No. 3 at 6.40 on Wednesday night as Severe Typhoon Yagi moved across the northern part of the South China Sea. Samantha Butler reports:
Policeman charged with taking HK$1.1 million in bribes Listen
The ICAC has charged a police chief inspector and his wife on suspicion of accepting more than HK$1.1 million in bribes from a merchant in exchange for preferential treatment and inside information. The couple will appear in Eastern Magistracy on Friday before the case is transferred to the District Court. Charlie Chun reports:
Appeals court overturns ruling on Headliner programme Listen
The Court of Appeal has overturned a ruling by the Communications Authority that a satirical RTHK TV programme breached broadcasting rules by insulting police officers and failing to ensure its content was accurate. Responding to the verdict, the Office of the Communications Authority said it was studying the ruling with its legal advisers before deciding the next step. Damon Pang reports:
President Xi presides over Africa summit Listen
President Xi Jinping has hosted more than two dozen African leaders at a banquet in Beijing, kicking off the city's biggest summit in years with promises of cooperation in infrastructure, energy and education. Two students, two teachers shot dead in Georgia Listen
Shortly into the new academic year in the US, a shooter at a Georgia high school has killed four people and injured at least nine others. Two of the deceased are students; the other two teachers. A local official says a 14-year-old student, named as Colt Gray, has been arrested in connection with the shooting. He is to be charged with murder and tried as an adult. Jamie Clarke reports:

A damning report into the Grenfell tower blaze has concluded that a decade of failures by the British government, construction companies and industry regulators turned the London high-rise into a death trap in 2017. 72 people died in the fire. The Hong Kong Golf Club says it is an inspiration to interact with and watch top class golf players perform. HK footballers take on Solomons in Tri-Nations Listen
In football, the Ashley Westwood era is set to kick off on Thursday when the Hong Kong men's team takes on the Solomon Islands as part of a Tri-Nations Football tournament hosted by Fiji. The former English Premier League ace Westwood was named as the new head coach of the Hong Kong, China men's football team last month.
